Friends at the Mweya Lodge

The Mweya Lodge is not enclosed with fencing or walls from the surrounding nature and as a result you get to see little visitors during the day, and if you’re lucky big visitors at night. During the day we saw birds, lizards, mongoose and wart hogs grazing outside our room. Our last day the mongoose seemed to take over the lodge and we saw them running around the outdoor dining area, raiding the maids buckets, and lounging in the shade of a big tree full of weavers.

At night the lodge also gets hippo visitors who come up from the Kazinga Channel. I never saw one by the lodge, but my dad spotted one right outside his room. Luckily he spotted it from his window while he was safe inside his room because hippos are responsible for more human fatalities in Africa than any other large animal. Hippos can run at up to 20MPH and have enormous jaws with over 20 inch canine teeth! I was happy that I just saw them from a distance in the channel.
